The period from 1880 to 1940 was an exciting and momentous epoch in the history of the decorative arts and industrial design; for the world at large was going through an era of rapid change and great upheaval, and the decorative arts were of course no exception. This time saw the rise of the professional designer and radical changes in industry, such as the beginnings of mass production and standardization. Modernism encompasses the rustic simplicity of the Arts & Crafts movement, the decadent sensuality of the Art Nouveau style and the urbane sophistication of the Art Deco style, and such avant-garde movements as the refined Wiener Werkstatte and ultramodern Bauhaus and De Stijl. This volume succinctly covers them all; devoting a full chapter to each style or movement written in an expressive, informative and concise manner that neatly sums them all up surprisingly well.Alastair Duncan has written an intellectually engaging and thoroughly absorbing book that is a good introduction for the person just starting to explore the history of the modern decorative arts and design, and it won't overwhelm one with too much information too soon. He clearly places each style or movement in its historical and chronological context while also briefly discussing key artists, designers, schools and companies that took part in each successive style or movement. One of the main reasons I love this book as much as I do is that it includes some very fine examples of the work of women decorative artists and industrial designers from this era, who though largely unknown today, were just as talented as their male peers... so full credit to Mr Duncan for that. Many of the artisans, craftspeople and designers of this period believed that the decorative arts should be given equal status to the so called fine arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. They consequently worked to elevate the status of everyday objects and decorative items by imbuing them with a refined aesthetic quality that appealed not only to the average person, but the discerning aesthete. And I think that many of the best objects from this period succeed in this democratic aim; because they transcend mere decorativeness or functionality to become artistic icons that have clearly defined the aesthetic principals, trends and tastes of a generation of applied artists from that era.All the beautiful examples shown in this stunning book are entirely drawn from the Norwest Corporations extensive and unique private collection; so if you're interested in the heady and innovative beginnings of modernism in the applied arts, this engaging book will give you a condensed overview with beautiful full colour photographs throughout to guide you. This was a revolutionary era in design history that spanned only sixty years; and one that quite literally forever changed the way we lived, loved, worked and played. Alastair Duncan is one of the most highly respected authorities on the decorative arts and industrial design of this period, and has written many fascinating books on the subject. So if you don't know as much as you'd like to about the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco or modernist design in general, Modernism: Modernist Design 1880-1940 would a good book to start with.

This book, although a little light in text, is rich in wonderful images of objects and furniture designed in the successive periods of design that we now associate with Modernism. Its breadth of scope and quality of image is outstanding!
